What is the meaning of the Christian festival of Epiphany

During our first Collective Worship of the new year we thought about the meaning of Epiphany.  We looked at a range of presents that might be given at Christmas and considered who would receive them.  We then reflected on the gifts that we had received and how we felt if one of them had been a surprise.  Ms Wilson then explained that 6th January is called Epiphany. It is the time when the Wise Men visited Jesus.

We identified that the Wise Men were not the only visitors to the stable and that shepherds had visited too.   The Wise Men and the shepherds were different but that did not matter as God wanted everyone to see Jesus.  We thought about how Jesus had received special gifts, just as we had, and the meaning of the gifts that the Wise Men had brought.  Finally, we found out that the word 'epiphany' means 'making known'; that the birth of Jesus was God beginning to make  known who Jesus.
