What is the meaning of the Christian festival of Epiphany
During our first Collective Worship of the new year we thought about the meaning of Epiphany (Twelfth Night). We reflected on the Christmas story and the important guests who went to Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus. We learned that Epiphany is when the three wise men arrived at the stable with their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Mryyh.
We also learned that in many countries, Christians perform a symbolic act to remember the visit of the wise men called 'chalking the door'. This is when some Christian people will write 20+C+M+B+22 above the door of their house. The numbers represent the year and the letters are the traditional names of the Maji - Caspar, Melchoir and Balthazar. the letters also form an abbreviation of the Latin words, 'Christus mansionem benedicat' which means 'May Christ bless this house'
We have 'chalked the door' at school so that we are all blessed for the coming year.
