St. Stephens 2 - 1 Cherry Gardens
The school football team got off to a winning start as they beat Cherry Gardens in an entertaining match. This was the preliminary round of the Boys cup and it was a tightly contested match.
Starting the game down the hill, St. Stephens had a number of good chances after some strong build-up but were still looking at going into half-time at 0-0. That was before a corner for the home side. An excellent delivery by Dexter flew past a number of bodies and nestled in the far corner.
Despite a couple of substitutions and formational changes, the side continued well in the second half although playing up the slope meant there were limited chances. As the game continued at 1-0, the away side grew in confidence finding some good positions in and around the box. Their equaliser came after some good work on the right-hand side led to a good opportunity which was taken with a fantastic left-footed strike into the far corner.
All square. The game was evenly balanced and there was an excellent display of battling between both sets of players. The winning moment eventually came as St. Stephens found some space and split the Cherry Gardens defence. As the keeper closed the space, Dexter tried an audacious chip over the keeper which thankfully paid off despite the desperate attempts of the visiting keeper.
A flurry of pressure came in the closing moments with throw ins, corners and free-kicks but St. Stephens held firm and are into the next round to play Blackhorse.
