This term, we will be exploring our book 'Stranded' which is based on a true story about some explorers who got stranded on an active volcanic island in Iceland! As part of this writing unit, we will be writing diary entries which include many new targets such as fronted adverbials of time and place.
Alongside our writing, we will exploring a new enquiry 'What is beneath our feet?' In this enquiry, we will be scientists and geographers by exploring many things such as types of rock. Please check our page often so see our fantastic learning!
Oracy Class Target
This term's oracy target for 3HN is: Can you explain your partner's opinion?

This term, we will be continuing to explore our enquiry 'How we do we live a healthy life?'. Within this enquiry, we will be scientists exploring the food groups and the importance of understanding the nutrition food brings to the body. We will also be engineers and make a nutrious meal incorporating all of the food groups. Moving on from this, we will be starting our new enquiry- What is underneath our feet? Within this enquiry, we will be geographers- learning about the formation of volcanoes, tectonic plates and the different rock formation.
Alongside this enquiry, we will be exploring our new class book, Krindlekrax. This is a thriller book all about a mysterious creature living underground in Lizard Street. As part of this book, we will be writing a non-chronological report about Krindlekrax. We will then be completing a diary entry based around the book- Stranded.
This afternoon, we used our plans to create some delicious pizzas with a variety of toppings. We thought carefully about what makes a healthy pizza and some of us even added huge amount of vegetables!
To kick off our new book- Stranded, a mostly true story from Iceland, we did a conscience alley. We listened to the author read the story about his grandfather who explored the newly created island of Surtsey, off the coast of Iceland. This island was created through an active volcano, so very dangerous to explore! We thought about whether the main character- Aevar should go to the island or not. We acted out being Aevar and taking a walk through the conscience alley. When Aevar walked through the alley, we tried to persuade them to our point of view- either explore the island or stay at home!

During our writing lessons, we have been creating Non-Chronological reports all about the mythical creature- Krindlekrax from our class book of the same name. We have looked at different examples of what a Non-Chronological report is and practised writing paragraphs about habitat, diet, appearance and behaviour. We also worked hard to include our writing targets- complex sentences and expanded noun phrases in our work.
Year 3 are continuing this term with a debate answering our enquiry question of 'What can we learn from Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age?' Alongside this, we will be creating our very own cave art. After that, we will be jumping into our second enquiry, answering our enquiry question- 'How do we live a healthy life?'
Within this enquiry, we will be scientists exploring the food groups and the importance of understanding the nutrition food brings to the body. We will also be engineers and make a nutrious meal incorporating all of the food groups.
We will continue reading our book 'Georges marvellous medicine' and use this to introduce targets into our writing to make it engaging for our readers.

Being Historians - Class Debate
To end our enquiry- ' What can we learn from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age?' We had a class debate. We used our debating skills from our innovation to debate which era we could learn the most from. We split up into three groups, each representing either the Stone, Bronze or Iron Age and we used our oracy skills to build upon, agree and challenge eachother's ideas. In the end we had a vote to decide which era we could learn the most from and it was decided that Iron Age was the era that we learnt the most from. This was because they learnt how to use metal to make stronger weapons and tools.
Being Artists- Cave Painting
We had our classroom turned into a Stone Age cave so we could practice our painting just like they would have done in the Stone Age. We picked natural items from outside including rocks, sticks and leaves and we used them to paint Stone Age animals and motifs on 'cave walls'. We also got messy and used our handprints as that was a common feature in Stone Age art. We loved creating our Stone Age art and painting our animals!
Term 1
Year 3 are kick starting the year with an incredible enquiry into the lives of people living in the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will be using the books 'The Stone Age Boy' to help us introduce targets into our writing to make it engaging for our readers.
In order to answer our enquiry question of 'What can we learn from Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age?', we will be explore what life was like for people living throughout these years to compare what was the same and what changed.

Being Theologians - Trip to St Stephen's Church
This morning, we had a fantastic trip to St Stephen's Church. We celebrated harvest festival before exploring the key features of a church. We really enjoyed our time here.
Being Poets- National Poetry Day
We celebrated Poetry day as a whole school, with the theme being Play! We started off our learning thinking about what play means to us. We then explored and a read a range of poems by different poets, including looking at wordplay and silly words! Then, we explored a year group poem- 'puddles.' We practiced reading it aloud and then we added actions. It was great to explore a range of poems and have fun while doing it!
Being Historians- Trip to Cheddar Gorge
To kickstart our understanding of the Stone, Bronze and Iron age, we had a fantastic trip to Cheddar Gorge. As part of our trip, we got to explore both incredible caves, take a trip through pre-history and even met a ‘Stone Age’ person called Arht who showed us how the Stone Age people lived, hunted and started fires!
Being Historians- Engage
To kick start our learning about our new enquiry- what can we learn from how the stone, bronze and iron ages lived? we tried out three stone age activities. We learnt how to weave using a small loom and paper strips, went outside into the secret forest and made shelters out of natural materials and handled flint whilst guessing what they could have been used for during the stone, bronze and iron ages. We can't wait to find out more about this time period and how these people used to live!
