Term 1

This term, Year 6 are going to be looking at the enquiry 'What have the Victorians taught us about working life?'.

Through this enquiry, we will be looking at two Global Goals: Goal 8 - Decent work and economic growth and Goal 10 - Reduced inequalities. Throughout the enquiry, we will be focusing on developing our skills are historians. As well as this, we are going to be immersing ourselves in the book Cogheart, using this to enhance our writing and to further immerse ourselves into the Victorian era.

Being Historians:

This week in 6ER we tried the activity - Conscience Alley - to convince someone whether Victorian children should go to work or go to school. The children had all sorts of ideas and really got stuck into it!

Being writers:

For National Poetry Day 2025, we learnt about and created a shared class 'silly sentence' poem. We thought about the silliest verbs, nouns and adjectives that we could combine and had fun deciding which was the most full of nonsense. Together, we created the poem in the pictures, we also asked AI to create some of the sentences as pictures! Then, in the afternoon, the children worked on decorating and performing the poem 'Skateboarding' by Joseph Coelho.

Being Orators:

This week in our Oracy lesson we have been learning to ask probing questions. The children discussed a range of questions with their partners and then we all stood for a class discussion. Our favourite discussion points were “Should Graffiti be illegal?” and “Trees can breathe”.

The Eggcellent Egg!

Each week in 6ER, someone who has worked hard, tried their best and preserved through challenges is rewarded with the company of the Eggcellent Egg on their desks! Congratulations to any of the children who win it, you are all fabulous!

Being a historian:

To engage in our first Enquiry of the year, we spent some time playing Victorian games and looking through Victorian adverts to compare how they are different from the games and adverts we see and use today. To start, we played some games, including pass the slipper and charades and then looked at adverts. The children noticed the lack of technology and resources available for both ads and games but also recognised that playground games and advertising is still very popular today!
