Term 4

Year 4 Termly overview 4

In Term 4 we will be looking at the enquiry 'What is the journey of a raindrop?'

For this, we will be learning about the stages of the water cycle, the 3 states of matter and identifying key features of a river.

In writing, we are looking at the book 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane'. We will be writing a narrative about his adventure finding himself and learning about love.

Keep an eye out for updates of our fantastic learning!

Being a Geographer

Today in 4SJ, we were geographers and made our own rivers to understand what each part is called and how a river works. We had lots of fun making our rivers in groups and seeing how the river is formed and where the water comes from in order to form it. There were some parts of the crafting process that we found tricky, but the children persevered, and eventually we had 5 wonderful homemade rivers that flowed really well.

Term 3

Year 4 Termly overview 3

In Term 3, Term 4 will be looking at the enquiry 'How do we hear sound?' and 'What is the journey of a raindrop?'

For this, we will be learning how sound waves work, about pitch and about volume. We will also be learning about the stages of the water cycle.

In our writing, we will be looking at the picture book 'The Barnabus Project' and writing our own narrative with our own failed project. We will also start our new class book 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane'

Being a Scientist

To top off our week in 4SJ, we had heaps of fun with a science experiment that tested how different objects can change their state of matter. We used candles to make a really simple version of a Bunsen burner and created a foil bowl to heat up a piece of chocolate to see what the heat does to it. Through our keen observation skills, we were able to see that the chocolate melted when exposed to heat and that it returned to its original state when given time to cool. It was really influential to our learning to see this change as opposed to just talking about it. We cannot wait to continue with our unit and possibly do another experiment or two!

Being an Athlete

This week, 4SJ had the great opportunity to participate in a cricket workshop, and we had so much fun. Our workshop leader, Rob, was wonderful and made every activity we completed fun! We started off with a quick reaction warm-up that the children needed careful listening skills for, and then we played a game of dodge cricket – a hybrid of dodgeball and cricket. Everyone got involved, and it was so exciting, we didn't want it to end!

Being a Scientist

4SJ have started completing our new enquiry today – What is the journey of a raindrop? This week we have learnt about the water cycle and its different stages ready to use in our writing lessons. Today, we have been learning about the three states of matter and what each matter looks like. We had a feel of solids, liquids and gases and grouped them using our newly learnt knowledge. To finish the lesson, we looked at how matter particles look and drew scientific versions of these in our books. The pictures below showcase some of our amazing work.

Being a Scientist

4SJ have been really busy today being scientists to understand how sound is made, how it works and how different pitches are made. We have conducted some simple listening experiments to see how different sounds change depending on how they are being heard. We have used boom whackers to experiment with sound and have created some great drawings of the ear and how sound waves enter, and they also did a great job at labelling sound waves. We have some great scientists in this classroom!

Term 2

Year 4 Termly Overview 2

In term 2, Year 4 looking at the enquiry 'How did the Ancient Greeks influence the Western World?'. We will be using the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur to help us in our writing.

In order to answer our enquiry question, we will be looking at democracy, the Olympics, architecture and different Greek Gods.

Keep checking out our webpage to see all of our fabulous work and find the answer to our enquiry question!

Term 1

Year 4 Termly Overview 1

Enquiry engage- Ancient Greeks

On Friday, we started our brand new enquiry 'How did the Ancient Greeks influence the Western World?'. For our engage, the whole year group sat in the hall and we did a tasting session where we explored traditional Greek foods. The children had the opportunity to try greek yoghurt, olives, feta cheese, flatbread and tzatziki. There were some foods that were more popular than others but the children were really good at giving everything a go.

We really enjoyed ourselves, especially when Mrs Wilson started dancing with us to the Greek background music.

National Poetry Day

In Year 4, we had so much fun exploring poetry and the themes Miss Nicholas gave us. Our year group poem was called 'Skipping Rope Spell'. In 4SJ we explored the skipping theme through the means on going out onto the playground and practicing our skipping skills and we sketched a person skipping. Our drawings were amazing!

Finally, 4SJ had the really important job of performing the year group poem in front of the rest of the school. We spent all afternoon rehearsing our poem off by heart and our performance was amazing!

Bristol Zoo Project trip

4SJ had a wonderful time today exploring Bristol Zoo Project. We saw lots of incredible animals, such as red pandas, meerkats, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, bears and a colourful array of birds. Unfortunately, not all the children in 4SJ saw wolves but some of us did channel our inner wolves and tried to lure them out of hiding with our excellent wolf howls (it didn't work!).

At the end of our day, we went to the jungle workshop where we learnt lots of facts about wolves: where they live, how they adapt to different temperatures, how they travel together, and we even got to touch some real wolf skins!

We had such a lovely day are here are just a few snippets of all the fun we enjoyed together!

Year 4 are kick-starting the year with an incredible enquiry looking into the similarities and differences between humans and wolves. We will be using the book 'Wolves in the Walls' to help us introduce targets into our writing to make it engaging for our readers.

In order to answer our enquiry question of 'Are wolves and humans similar?', we will be exploring the digestive system, teeth and food chains.

Keep checking out our webpage to see all of our fabulous work and find the answer to our enquiry question!
