Term 4

This term, we will be continuing to look at our enquiry 'How has our understanding of the human body changed over time?'. We will be historians and scientists as we navigate the medical world and the changes that have happened across history as well as look at our own understanding of the human body today. As well as this, we will be continuing to read 'Wonder', which links in with our writing, where we will be creating a monologue and a narrative around the film 'Little Freak'.

Year 6 Learning Overview 4

Being writers/orators

In order to fully understand what a monologue is, we took a part of the film Little Freak and performed the monologue in  front of a group. Before this, we spent some time practising so that we could stand tall, use hand gestures and talk with expression – not just read off the sheet! We used our physical oracy strand to use body language and project our voice well, changing our pace appropriately.

Being writers

To kick off this term, we immersed ourselves in our next piece of writing – a monologue based around the short film 'Little Freak'. As part of this, we thought about the place in which the little boy was living. Partner A had to describe the setting to Partner B, who was facing the other way, so that they could have a go at drawing it. Our oracy skills of articulating our ideas and using the cognitive strand to think about what we were saying really helped to get great images of the setting.

Term 3

This term, we will be moving onto looking at 'How has our understanding of the human body changed over time?'. During this enquiry, we will be becoming scientists and historians as we look at how medicine has changed throughout history and how we have learnt from the past to help with our medical knowledge today.

Year 6 Learning Overview 3

Cooking Club!

Year 6 are lucky enough to have a club that is exclusive to them and we love it! This week, we decorated biscuits using strawberry laces, malteasers and buttons. Miss Keeble helped us to make some water icing and we used this to stick our toppings on. It was very messy but very fun!

Being historians

This term, we have started our new enquiry, 'How has our understanding of the human body changed over time?', and to kick start it, we looked at a range of medical equipment that have been used throughout history, trying to guess what it was they were used for back in the day. We wrote our predictions out on paper and then looked at the real use of each piece of equipment to see if we were right.

 Being writers

Towards the end of last term, we started our narrative writing sequence, where we are writing about one of our favourite parts of Cogheart – the break-in at the clock shop where Thaddeus is shot and sadly killed. In order to really become at one with the characters, we went into the hall and in groups, we role-played the scene. We remembered quotes and actions from the story to really allow us to convey our characters well - which will help us when writing our own narratives!

Term 2

This term, we will start by continuing into the world of Victorians, showing off what we have learnt during our ambition. After this, we will be moving onto looking at 'How has our understanding of the human body changed over time?'. During this enquiry, we will be becoming scientists and historians as we look at how medicine has changed throughout history and how we have learnt from the past to help with our medical knowledge today.

Life Skills

Term 1

This term, Year 6 are going to be looking at the enquiry 'What have the Victorians taught us about working life?'.

Through this enquiry, we will be looking at two Global Goals: Goal 8 - Decent work and economic growth and Goal 10 - Reduced inequalities. Throughout the enquiry, we will be focusing on developing our skills are historians. As well as this, we are going to be immersing ourselves in the book Cogheart, using this to enhance our writing and to further immerse ourselves into the Victorian era.

Being orators

This week, we had the opportunity to share ur amazing work with children from 6KP! In order to be ready for our Oracy Open Classrooms on Tuesday, we split our class in half and went to present our favourite piece of work with children in the other class. We spoke about things that we liked about our work as well as how we could improve it next time.

Being writers

This term, we have been looking at writing a persuasive advert. In order to this, we looked at a range of different persuasive techniques, one of which was looking at adverbs of possiblity. We went outside onto the playground to decide the degree of how likely something was to happen based on the adverb of possiblity that was used. We had a scale of 0% to 100% and we ran to the percentage we thought best fit the word.

Being theologians

This term in RE, we have been answering the question 'What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?'. In order to show off everything that we have learned throughout the term, today we became radio hosts. In pairs, one of us was a radio host and the other was a modern-day Muslim. We took turns asking and answering the questions, using our knowledge and our RE books to support our answers. We asked questions about the 5 pillars, Mecca, Ramadan and different mosques.

Being historians

In order to engage ourselves in our new enquiry, we spent some time playing Victorian games and looking through Victorian adverts to compare how they are different from the games and adverts we see and use today. To start, we played some games, including pass the slipper and Reverend Crawley's game. When we were playing them, we realised that some of them were quite similar to modern games that we play. For example, pass the slipper is very similar to pass the parcel, and lookabout was close to hide and seek. After, we looked at some adverts from that era. One advert was for cleaning carpets and another was for the National Skating Palace. There was even a poster for children's reins and the all new gas fires! It was exciting and fun to play the games and have a look at what life was like back then!
