Key Information

6ER have outdoor P.E. on a Monday and indoor P.E. on a Wednesday.

6ER's entrance and exit points are in the main school playground. At the end of the day, children will be released from the door onto the playground.

Term 5

This term, Year 6 are going to be exploring a new enquiry: Linnaeus and Darwin: How are they connected. This will see us being scientists as we explore evolution and inheritance, as well as living things and their habitiats. Supporting this, we will be geographers as we look at different biomes and how this effects how we evolve. We will be reading 'Darwin's Dragons' within our reading sequence to further support this. Within our writing this term, we will be looking at the book 'The Arrival' and we will be pouring all of our emotions into a letter about this book. As well as this, we will be revising hard for our SATs, which will be taking place in Week 4.

Being musicians:

In Year 6 we have started looking at, rehearsing and performing our production songs as a class and as a year group. The children have learnt about expression through song and articulating each word so that the audience can hear their lovely singing!

6ER Reading Challenge:

As 6ER reached another reading goal, they were rewarded with watching the current class book movie of Wonder! They really enjoyed seeing the book in movie form. Well done 6ER!

Term 4

This term, Year 6 are going to be continuing to look at the enquiry 'What could our future in Soundwell look like?'. Through this enquiry, we will be looking at two Global Goals: Goal 7 - Affordable and clean energy, and Goal 11 - Sustainable cities and communities. Throughout the enquiry, our lead state is Being a Geographer. As well as this, our writing is going to be based on the book The Promise and we will continue to immerse ourselves into our class book: Wonder.

Being ourselves:
This week, in Thrive we have continued to work on our teamwork and collaboration skills to create a board game. This particular session has been on creating an initial agreed upon plan which we will then tweak and edit as we go forwards. Next, we looked at some 'competitors' and how they compare to our initial ideas!

Being musicians

This week, Year 6 have started to learn the songs to our production! We are using the singing assembly time to get together as a year group to get a head start on our songs that we need for the production. We are ready to smash it this year so watch this space! Welcome to our jungle!!

World Book Day!

It is that time of year again, where we get to come together to celebrate books! We all had a blast, dressing up as our book heroes and working together as a class to design our own class hero! We then created comic books using our class hero as the main character! As well as this, we had a character battle, where we created a top trumps style card for our heroes and battled between ourselves to find the best hero! To top it off, we had an author come in to talk to us all about her books! What an incredible day!

Being Writers

This week, we immersed ourselves into our new writing book - The Promise. This book is all about a girl who made a promise to plant acorns after stealing them from an old lady. We spoke about the moral of the story being that kindness can grow and also that we should be working together to make the world a better place. What started as a mean and hard and ugly city, ended up the complete opposite because of this! To really get ourselves engaged in the book and to understand the characters better, we role played the story with each person in our group taking on a different role: the girl, the grandma, the community or the narrator.

Term 3:

This term, Year 6 are going to be looking at the enquiry 'What could our future in Soundwell look like?'. Through this enquiry, we will be looking at two Global Goals: Goal 7 - Affordable and clean energy and Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities. Throughout the enquiry, our lead states are Being a Scientist and Being a Geographer. As well as this, we are going to be beginning to look at our next class book 'Wonder'.

Being Artists:

This week, in Year 6, we have been learning about the Lunar New Year and particularly Willow Patterns. Because of this, as part of an Art lesson, the children learnt about and then designed a Willow Pattern Tile. This was all about some star-crossed lovers and how the pattern represented this story - how perfect for Valentines Day! Here are some examples of their work:

Being Orators:

This week, in 6ER, we have been trying to practice and improve our oracy skills. One technique we have been trying out is 'the onion' where there is an inner and an outer circle and then they rotate to improve their discussion points with the views of others.

Thrive:

This week, in our Thrive (PSHE) session we continued to discuss the online vs. real world and focused specifically on the impact and influence the online world can have on us. The children saw some different scenarios and decided if it had a positive, negative, not sure or depends influence on them. There was lots of very interesting discussions and many children had strong views about their lives online!

Being Scientists:

This week, we have been scientists in 6ER, by investigating light and shadow. We have revisited last week's learning on light sources, the direction of travel and the colours of light and built on this with learning about shadows. After drawing a scientific diagram of shadows, the children used torches themselves to investigate more about the angle, size and shape of shadows that they created themselves!

Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue:

This week, Year 6 were lucky enough to start off with a visit from Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue. Building on from our trip to Life skills, they came in to teach us fire and water safety. We had a range of different scenarios to work through as a group and then we went through the answers to check our understanding. It was very thought-provoking and we all left feeling like we knew a little more on how to keep ourselves safe.

Being Geographers:

This week, we have been beginning our next Enquiry with our Engage lesson. The children had the chance to discover and explore different blueprints and maps become curious about them. They then had the opportunity to design their own and they made some brilliant structures.

Term 2

This term, Year 6 are going to be looking at the enquiry 'What have the Victorians taught us about working life?'. Through this enquiry, we will be looking at two Global Goals: Goal 8 - Decent work and economic growth and Goal 10 - Reduced inequalities. Throughout the enquiry, our lead state is Being a Historian. As well as this, we are going to be continuing our work around the book Cogheart in our writing to further immerse ourselves into the Victorian era.

Being actors and musicians:

This term, we had the incredible treat of visiting the pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome thanks to the hard work of the PTA who organised and paid for it. The children had a brilliant time and someone even said they would have watched it 100 times over!

Being Lowinger:

Last week, our House winners for Term 1, were able to enjoy some homemade pizzas! Here are some pictures of the children enjoying their well-earned treat!

Being Theologians:

For interfaith day, the children in Year 6 focused on Humanism and their emphasis on Nature and Light. Because of this, we focused on sunsets and sunrises and how they demonstrate the beauty of our planet. The children used watercolours to demonstrate this beauty and here are some wonderful examples!

Being Athletes:

In Indoor PE, we have been learning about and performing Bollywood. The children have started with hand movements and then moved onto feet movements. They have been working really hard to remember all of the moves and perform them with skill!

Being Athletes:

This week, we have started playing Hockey in Outdoor PE. We have focused on our stick control and ball dribbling skills and thinking about manoeuvring around spaces and obstacles. We set up a little challenge course to really test us to our limits!

Term 1

This term, Year 6 are going to be looking at  the enquiry 'How has our understanding of the human body changed over time?'. Through this enquiry, we will be looking at Global Goal 3 - Good Health and Wellbeing and our lead state is Being a Historian. As well as this, we are going to be looking at the book Cogheart in our writing to immerse ourselves in the Victorian era as we travel through time in enquiry.

Being historians and scientists

This term, we have been looking at the enquiry question 'How has our understanding of the human body changed over time?'. In order to show off our understanding, we have been creating a presentation to share with our parents, explaining all of the weird and wonderful things we have learned about the changes in medicine throughout the ages. We worked tirelessly to create an engaging piece of work that we are super proud of. Please take a look at the pictures of our final pieces below.

Being Orators:

This week, we have had the pleasure of sharing our work with 4GE to practice for sharing our work with parents/carers at the oracy morning and afternoon next week. We did our best to use the sentence stems and supported the Year 4s in doing the same.

Being a Metacog:

Alongside our Enquiry, we have been recapping what it means to work together as a team successfully. We discussed good and bad teamwork and then put it to the test by building a spaghetti tower. We found it really difficult but we tried really hard to be patient and share out the responsibilities!

Being a writer - National Poetry Day!

This week, we were excited to step away from our normal daily routine to immerse ourselves into the world of poetry. We started by creating our own rhymes and then we went on to explore a range of poetry books. One book we focused on in particular was Poems Aloud by Joseph Coelho. We then used one of his poems 'The bones of Pampachiri' as inspiration for our own poems about different places. In the afternoon, we rehearsed and recited a poem ready for all of our parents to see.

6ER We Refugees

Being a Musician:

This week in 6ER we have added Glockenspiels to our music rehearsals! After we discussed all the different musical elements, we then added in instruments to this term's song - It's All About Love! Here is a video of one of the rehearsals, how brilliant!

6ER Music - It's all about love

Being a Scientist and Athlete

This week, in 6ER we have completed a scientific enquiry titled 'How does exercise impact the heart?' where we have investigated the change in heart rate depending on a change in exercise. Here are some pictures of the children carrying out the practical element of our experiment! What brilliant athletes and scientists they are!

Being a Musician

This week, in 6ER, we have been musicians by using our voices as instruments, being able to evaluate songs and using our musical knowledge to identify the genre of the song. We also explored the dynamics, tempo and pitch of the song before trying it out ourselves!  Here are some pictures of us warming up and practising the singing.

Being a Historian

This week, in Enquiry we have been learning about the Black Death and the Medieval times and how they coped with this awful disease! The children researched and learnt about how they attempted to prevent the great plague and created posters warning others about it. Here is their brilliant historical artistic work!
