Term 6

Carnival Week - Day 5: Carnival Parade!

Carnival week - Day 2: Costume making

On day 2 we had fun making costumes. We had to make wrist bands with different coloured flames and some fire themed skirts to go with our tie dyed t-shirts. In the afternoon, we also had a dance workshop to help us prepare for our carnival on Friday.

Carnival week - Day 1: Mask making!

On day 1 we made some fire themed masks 🔥 ready for our carnival. We also tie dyed some t-shirts and designed our own carnival float.

Computing: coding a website

We edited the code for some well known websites using 'X-ray goggles' we changed the price of iPhones as well as the careers of professional footballers!

For our WOW day we experienced what Roman's wore and how they fought. We were taught battle tactics and formations and practised working as a Roman unit. We also worked in the classroom looking at Roman artifacts and what the Romans brought to Britain.

Term 5

Enquiry Overview:

In Term 5, Year 4 will be exploring the fascinating continent of South America and comparing it to the UK. We will be locating and plotting the major countries, cities, rivers and mountains before zooming into Tierra Del Fuego as we discover the life of Jemmy Button through our Power of Reading text.

After following Jemmy's extraordinary encounters as an outsider in an unfamiliar land and his emotional return home, we will finish our enquiry: What does it mean to belong? with a piece of artwork.

Computing - Makey makeys

Still image for this video
During our computing day we learnt about how to create safe passwords by using upper and lower case letters, symbols and uncommon pattern. We created our own passwords and tested how safe they were. We then used the Makey Makeys to control our chrome book. We were able to use different conductors to control the keys.

Music - Prove it!

Still image for this video
For our Prove it, we came up with our own 4 beat patterns to go in time with 'Shape of you' by Ed Sheeran. We then put all our groups patterns together to go with the song and performed as a class.

RE: The Ten Commandments - Diamond Nine

In our RE lesson we found out what the Ten commandments were and why they are important rules that Jewish people live by. We Discussed what each commandment meant and then ranked them on which we felt were the most relevant to us today. We then came up with a class order and create our own 'tenth' commandment which we could live by. Here are some examples:

"Do not hurt others intentionally." - Maisie

"Respect everyone for who they are." - Connor

"Look after our environment." - Colby

RE: Golden Rules:

In RE, we made our own games without rules. We discussed the impact having rules for games has and then talked about 'golden rules' which we can live our lives by. Here are some photos of us playing our games.

For our WOW we created some artwork using buttons. We designed the background using paint and then added on buttons in various colours to decorate our designs.

Term 4

Enquiry Overview: Are we the same as a gorilla?

In Term 4, Year 4 will be using their investigative skills to answer the question: Am I the same as a gorilla? We will be grouping and classifying different animals before focusing on gorillas, theirhabitats and the dangers they face. Using what we learnt last term, we will then move onto looking at the digestive system and teeth of gorillas before finishing our enquiry with a small videopresentation based around a Venn diagram

Conscience alley

Still image for this video
We talked about the dilemma Moses faced when trying to free the Jews from the Pharaoh. We made Moses walk through the conscience alley and decide whether he should persevere with his mission.

Wow: How do we celebrate?

For our WOW, we had our own mini celebration in the hall. We played a range of party games (which got some of us quite messy!) and talked about why different people celebrate. We particularly enjoyed it when some people were covered in flour.

Challenge: Am I the same as a gorilla?

Hot seating

As a class, we got into role as the character 'Hannah' from our class book and talked about how we felt on our adventure with gorilla.  We then noted down some of her responses.

Food Webs

Still image for this video

As a class, we talked about food webs and how different animals depend on each other for food. We understood the terms: predator, prey, consumer and producer. We used string to create our own giant food webs.

PE - Hockey

Hockey - dribbling and passing

Still image for this video
In our PE lessons with Bristol Sport we have been keeping out of the rain and developing our hockey skills in the hall. We practised our dribbling and our passing whilst keeping the ball under control.
For our Wow Day we went to Bristol Zoo. We explored all of the different animals and had a workshop about food chains and teeth. We got to hold some hissing cockroaches, stroke a slithery snake and pet a wriggling rat. We had a fantastic time.
This term we will be using the book 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne to help us inspire our writing. The book revolves around a girl called Hannah and her love of gorillas. We will innovate the story, creating our own versions and also use it to help us hit our new targets.

Term 3

‘His eyes, like headlamps, glowed white, then red, then infra-red, searching the sea.’ How is this possible?

This term, we will be learning about electricity, particularly focusing on: how electricity powers a lamp; which materials are conductors and what happens when you break a circuit. We shall be carrying out different investigations to solve these. Alongside the science, we shall be reading our Power of Reading text: The Iron Manand using what we learn about him to create a 3D model of the Iron Man with eyes that glow!

The Digestive System

Today we had a fantastic time getting messy whilst learning about the digiestive system! First of all, we mixed all sorts of food in a bag and squished them all together to represent the food being chewed up in our mouths. We added water and orange juice which acted as saliva and bile in our stomachs. The food got even more churned up with all the juices! We then squeezed the mixture through the tights which acted as our intestines, allowing minerals, nutrients and water to pass through the walls into our bodies. The experiment really helped us visualise the journey of our food as it passes through our digestive system.

RE - Body language

In our RE lessons, we have been looking at how Muslims pray and what body language they show when doing so. We tried to show some different emotions using our body language:  excitement, frustration, worry, happy, shock and embarrassment . See if you can guess which is which:

Safer Internet Day!

Today was Safer Internet Day and schools across the country took part in a variety of ways. We spent the whole day looking at the terms 'permission' and 'consent', exploring what these mean in our online world. We thought about what we need to do to ask for permission and also how to get consent before taking photos or posting/sharing online.

We then went on to design our own internet superheroes and what their superpower would be. We came up with fantastic ideas that would keep us safe and happy online.

WOW - Pizza time!

We've managed to squeeze in another science enquiry this term! To finish off the term, we'll be answering the question: Where does my lunch go? To get us thinking, we all made pizzas and then thought about the pizza's journey through our bodies after we ate them. We're going to be looking at the role of teeth and how our digestive system works next.

Challenge - Robot heads!

4OL had a go at their challenge: To make a 3D model of Iron Man with eyes that glow. We took cardboard boxes and tin foil to create our masterpieces! Once we had the head ready to go, we used our knowledge of circuits to help bring our robots to life!

For computing this term, we looked at Probots. Probots are mini robots that are able to move when you have programmed in a specific instruction. We challenged ourselves by programming the robots to follow circuits and some of us were even able to draw pictures using these intelligent machines. Have a look at the Probots at work.

Art Day:

For our art day we started by creating some collages using paper, newspaper and tissue paper. We then used these to create leaves in a range of colours and the trunks of some trees. Here you can see the fantastic results!

Our outdoor P.E. sessions are focusing on netball this term. We are going to improve our passing, catching, shooting and defending skills.  It's a fantastic sport which will use our spacial awareness and communication skills in order to be successful. By the end of the term, we will be fantastic netballers who will be worthy of St Stephen's netball team.

Working Circuits

As part of our enquiry this term, we carried out an investigation to identify whether a circuit would work depending on its components. We tested and then edited our circuits so that they would work and challenged ourselves to incease the number of cells and the number of working bulbs within the circuits.

After slowing revealing the beginning of Iron Man, we made robots out of junk in groups. In the afternoon, we watched the film Robots

Term 2

Key information:

4JS will have outdoor P.E on a Tuesday and indoor P.E on a Thursday

Enquiry Overview: Would I be a Spartan or an Athenian?

In Term 2, Year 4 are learning about Ancient Greece. We will be answering the question: 'Would I be a Spartan or an Athenian?' During this enquiry, we will look at the Global goal of equality and discuss if we believe men and woman were equal in the past, comparing the roles of men and women in Athenian and Spartan society and look at how this may have changed over time.

4JS Nativity

We were lucky enough to get to perform our nativity over at the Church this year. We did an amazing job delivering our lines in a clear and confident way. We remembered exactly what we needed to do and were super proud of ourselves. Our message was all about understanding the true meaning of Christmas.

Painting Fun!

We have been learning how to paint using a variety of paint brushes. We started off my looking closely at different paint brush tips and discussed which ones might be used and why. We then had a go at painting some flowers where we mixed paints to create purples and pinks. After we had practised the skill,we sketched the Green Ship and painted it using a selection of different greens we had mixed. We used a think black pen to go around the ship resulting in a fantastic final piece.

Painting fun!

Prove it!

For our 'prove it', we held a debate to answer our question: Would you rather be a Spartan or an Athenian? We delivered our thoughts and opinions clearly. Which one would you rather be?

Anti-Bullying Week

This week, we have been thinking about what bullying is. We understand that bullying is STOP. Several, Times, On, Purpose. We thought about different ways we might be unkind to one another and how we can make sure this happens less. We also know that the most important thing to do is to TELL. A problem shared is a problem halved!

We made posters to raise awareness of what bullying is and what you should do if you think you are being bullied.

As part of our PE lessons, we have been learning to play hockey focusing on how to dribble and pass the ball.

we have been thinking about different ways to measure. We now understand we use different tools to measure and that estimating is a really important skill to help you get an accurate result.

Safer, Fitter, Greener

We have been visited by Andy who is part of the Road Safety Team to talk to us about safe places to cross the road. We played games in groups in learn about all the different ways. We know it is important to stay fit and healthy but also how important it is to be seen on the roads and to stay safe. We were given a reflective smiley faces to stick on our school bags to make sure we are seen when we are walking to and from school.

Safer, Fitter, Greener

Sampling School Dinners

We had a great opportunity today to sample school dinners! We tried foods we might not have tried before including chickpea curry and potato and leek pie. They were really delicious! School dinners are great!

Sampling School Dinners

For our WOW, we dressed up as Ancient Greeks. We spent the day learning about what life was like in the Ancient Greek times. We carried our research to find out our information and created a fact file. We also tasted Greek food. We were surprised by some of the different tastes. Not many of us were very keen on olives!

Tasting Greek Food!

As part of our WOW, we got to taste Greek food! We tried olives, feta cheese, falafels, flat bread and houmous. We were surprised at how much of it we liked but olives are certainly a taste to be desired! We really enjoyed the feta and can definitely see this being added to salads!

Term 1

Year 4 Newsletter

Key information:

4JS will have indoor P.E on Tuesday and outdoor P.E on Thursday.

Enquiry Overview: Why does it snow?

Year 4 are starting the year as scientists! We’ll be looking at the characteristics of solids, liquids and gases before focusing our attention on conducting scientific investigations. We will be setting up simple practical enquiries to look at the melting speed of different solids, and measuring temperature changes over time. We shall then use this data to draw simple conclusions and present our findings. Finally, we will look closely at the water cycle and consider our enquiry question: Why does it snow?

For our art enquiry, we have been learning to sketch from different view points. We started off by making lots of different marks. We looked at hatching and circles to make lighter and darker patterns. We then used these skills to sketch a snow boot and a snowy owl, two things that Ivan might of seen on his journey.

What is a place of Worship?

We went to visit St Stephen's Church to understand what are the main features of a church. We had a great time learning about the font, alter, stain-glass windows and pews. We really enjoyed hearing the bell ring as we left. We will be using our new knowledge to draw a floor plan of the church.

Pupil Voice Elections

4JS have been busy preparing their speeches for the Pupil Voice elections. After hearing the speeches, we were able to vote for one boy and one girl to represent our class. These representatives will help us make the school better. They will attend meetings and feed back to us.

As a part of our enquiry 'Why does it snow?', we were placed into groups and were given the task of creating a presentation to show to the rest of the class. The presentation would test our knowledge on what we have learnt so far including states of matter, the water cycle and types of cloud. Working collaboratively, each member of our group were assigned a different role and this helped us to produce very interesting and detailed presentations. Have a look at the results:

Today we were able to use the chromebooks to help us with our learning. We first looked at how we could make our passwords stronger so people do not have easy access to our information. In the afternoon, we were introduced to Google Classroom. We used Google Classroom to complete a set of questions and submit our answers online.

Observing Over Time

Today, we went outside and used a thermometer to explore how the temperature changes across a day. We measured the temperature every hour. We were surprised that the temperature seemed to increase by one degree each hour!

Observing Over Time

Melting Points

We conducted an experiment to learn about melting points. We wanted to find out which solid had the lowest melting point. The solids we used were ice, butter and chocolate. We made sure it was a fair test by using the same amount of solid and applying the same amount of heat.

Melting Points

Collaborative Learning

After researching how to survive in snowy conditions, we worked in pairs to produce an eye catching leaflet to inform others. We thought about layout and how to present our findings. We worked well with our partner and we are really proud of our finished products.

Collaborative Learning Project

Conscience Alley

We helped Ivan make up his mind as to whether he should leave his family and village to go and look for his lost brother or stay. We thought carefully about the reasons 'For' and 'Against' and then created a concience alley to try and persuade Joseph.

Conscience Alley

Prior Knowledge

To kick start our science learning, we have been discussing our prior knowledge. Finding out about what we already know. We were asked several different questions where we talked to others around us to see if we had similar ideas. It was fascinating and we can't wait to learning more about, 'Why does it snow?'

Prior Knowledge

Collaborative Learning

We have been learning about how to work in a group successfully. We understand we need to take turns, be polite, motivate and support one another. We cheered each other on as we passed the hoop around the circle in the record time of 2 minutes and 16 seconds! Well done 4JS!

Team work makes the dream work!

Marvellous Maths

We have been using dienes to help us with our place value. We made 4 digit numbers and thought carefully about what each digit represented.

We kick started our enquiry by making snow! It was great fun! We couldn't believe how it expanded to make so much. We went outside and played with it while the sun shone which was a strange feeling!
