We started off the day learning our address and emergency contact telephone number. After that, we thought about what an 'emergency' actually is. The dictionary describes it as 'A sudden and dangerous situation that must be dealt with quickly'.
Next, we sorted some pictures using a Venn diagram and had some fantastic discussions about how situations can suddenly turn from fun to serious. After break, we looked at fire emergencies in particular and what we would do if we heard the fire alarm go off at school, at home, at The Mall and whilst we were swimming in Kingswood leisure centre. We also looked at what we would do if the fire alarm went off and we were in a high rise building - lots of us didn't know that we should never use a lift in the event of a fire! We then discussed what happens when we ring 999 and did some role play using a 999 script. Finally, we went out individually and practised 'ringing' 999 using the school phone (Don't worry, we just rang Mrs March who was playing the role of the operator in a different room!)
During the afternoon, we learnt about smoke alarms and how important they are! Then, we designed floor plans of our own homes and thought about how we could evacuate them in the event of a fire.
