Year 4 Newsletter

Enquiry Overview: Why does it snow?

Year 4 are starting the year as scientists! We’ll be looking at the characteristics of solids, liquids and gases before focusing our attention on conducting scientific investigations. We will be setting up simple practical enquiries to look at the melting speed of different solids, and measuring temperature changes over time. We shall then use this data to draw simple conclusions and present our findings. Finally, we will look closely at the water cycle and consider our enquiry question: Why does it snow?

Sketching

For our art enquiry, we have been learning to sketch from different view points. We started off by making lots of different marks. We looked at hatching and circles to make lighter and darker patterns. We then used these skills to sketch a snow boot and a snowy owl, two things that Ivan might of seen on his journey.

What is a place of Worship?

We went to visit St Stephen's Church to understand what are the main features of a church. We had a great time learning about the font, alter, stain-glass windows and pews. We really enjoyed hearing the bell ring as we left. We will be using our new knowledge to draw a floor plan of the church. 

 

Pupil Voice Elections

4JS have been busy preparing their speeches for the Pupil Voice elections. After hearing the speeches, we were able to vote for one boy and one girl to represent our class. These representatives will help us make the school better. They will attend meetings and feed back to us.  

Challenge

As a part of our enquiry 'Why does it snow?', we were placed into groups and were given the task of creating a presentation to show to the rest of the class. The presentation would test our knowledge on what we have learnt so far including states of matter, the water cycle and types of cloud. Working collaboratively, each member of our group were assigned a different role and this helped us to produce very interesting and detailed presentations. Today we were able to use the chromebooks to help us with our learning. We first looked at how we could make our passwords stronger so people do not have easy access to our information. In the afternoon, we were introduced to Google Classroom. We used Google Classroom to complete a set of questions and submit our answers online.

Today, we went outside and used a thermometer to explore how the temperature changes across a day. We measured the temperature every hour. We were surprised that the temperature seemed to increase by one degree each hour!

Melting Points

We conducted an experiment to learn about melting points. We wanted to find out which solid had the lowest melting point. The solids we used were ice, butter and chocolate. We made sure it was a fair test by using the same amount of solid and applying the same amount of heat.

Collaborative Learning

After researching how to survive in snowy conditions, we worked in pairs to produce an eye catching leaflet to inform others. We thought about layout and how to present our findings. We worked well with our partner and we are really proud of our finished products.

Conscience Alley

We helped Ivan make up his mind as to whether he should leave his family and village to go and look for his lost brother or stay. We thought carefully about the reasons 'For' and 'Against' and then created a concience alley to try and persuade Joseph.

Prior Knowledge

To kick start our science learning, we have been discussing our prior knowledge. Finding out about what we already know. We were asked several different questions where we talked to others around us to see if we had similar ideas. It was fascinating and we can't wait to learning more about, 'Why does it snow?'

We have been learning about how to work in a group successfully. We understand we need to take turns, be polite, motivate and support one another. We cheered each other on as we passed the hoop around the circle in the record time of 2 minutes and 16 seconds! Well done 4JS!

Marvellous Maths

We have been using dienes to help us with our place value. We made 4 digit numbers and thought carefully about what each digit represented.

Wow!

We kick started our enquiry by making snow! It was great fun! We couldn't believe how it expanded to make so much. We went outside and played with it while the sun shone which was a strange feeling!
